Now as never before, the future of design and our planet go hand in hand. Design has a fundamental role of responsibility for people and the planet.
Together we are united in our belief that design can do great things for people, society, and the planet, and that innovation and sustainability are fundamental to good design and a better future. We want to inspire young designers to cross borders with new and surprising collaborations in art, fashion, architecture, industrial design, etc. Korea and Sweden both have an emerging visionary design scene. KSYDA was created to shine a light on this and to recognize, inspire and enable young Korean designers.
Sweden Korea Young Design, first held in 2017, was an important event, where the new collaboration between Sweden and Korea provided a vision into the design of today and tomorrow and started the legacy of KSYDA.
Emerging designers selected by the Ung Svensk Form teamed up with IKEA Korea and Korean design students for this exhibition. The exhibition showcased collaborative creations as well as iconic IKEA products based on Democratic Design. The initiation of KSYDA was also announced during the event.
KSYDA is a unique collaboration between the Embassy of Sweden in Korea, and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP), and IKEA Korea to show how design worldwide can produce great ideas to empower and inspire people to make a difference.
KSYDA supports young talents in design to further grow as global designer, with three core values of innovation, sustainability, and a better future.
In 2019, the Embassy of Sweden, Korea Institute of Design Promotion, and IKEA Korea held the 1st Korea + Sweden Young Design Award (KSYDA).
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Sweden, the award ceremony held in Stockholm, Sweden, was attended by the First Lady Kim Jeong-suk, Queen Sylvia of Sweden, and the three KSYDA winners, opening a venue for design exchange between the two countries.
The 2nd Korea + Sweden Young Design Award was held in 2020 amid COVID19. Finalists participated in the online exhibition of the Design Korea Festival for the first time, and the award ceremony was held at the Swedish residence.
In 2021, the 3rd Korea+Sweden Young Design Award was the largest award ever and not only held the award ceremony for the Finalists, but also the exhibition and design talk within Design Korea period.
By continuously discovering new designers, KSYDA intends to play a role in connecting Korean and Swedish designs.
